Naturalist Center
is Your Wilderness Adventure Headquarters in
North Carolina!
We are your number one choice in the Western North
Carolina area for learning valuable primitive skills in wilderness self reliance,
nature studies, wilderness awareness skills, back to the earth
skills, modern homesteading and personal self
discovery in this wild and most wonderful world in which we live! We
hope you are as excited as we are in discovering nature in all it's
glory, and we'll help lead you back into the the purity of nature!
Our Philosophy
Our mission is to provide educational experiences
in multiple areas of naturalist studies, wilderness survival skills,
native-based philosophy and sustainable living skills meant to foster a
more intimate connection to the natural world.

Our unique approach combines elements of
native-based survival-living-skills and modern sustainable design
philosophies which can be used in any environment from woodland forests
to tropical jungles. Our instructional models are based on enhancing
one’s knowledge of their surroundings and provides real world experience
through time tested techniques that work to enhance the understanding
and awareness of the natural world.
A partial list of our many programs include weekend
survival skill training from shelter construction, fire
by friction methods, collection of water from the environment and
methods for acquiring food from the land including the collection, identification and preparation of edible and
medicinal
plants. Other classes run the gamut of basic ecology, awareness of the
natural world, disaster preparedness, sustainable building design,
native-based philosophy and meditation plus other more naturalist based
aspects such as bird vocal language & flight patterns, animal tracking and environmental
stewardship.
Our land and most of our overnight programs
are held in the Lost Cove area of the Blue Ridges Mountains
in North Carolina located near Grandfather Mountain. We hold some of our
classes in various locations throughout the Blue Ridge Parkway and
National Forest areas as well.
We also have land in the tropical
rainforest of Central America, located in the southern district of Belize
where we will are our holding jungle classes.

The State of Alaska is arresting and fining Charles Vandergaw
$10,000 for feeding bears. They seized his plane and will arrest
him if he doesn't comply. All because he is a 70 year old
gentle man who loves bears and is pushing bear research &
understanding forward by leaps & bounds. Alaska changed the bear
feeding law and made it stiffer specifically to go after
Vandergaw. This was after they revoked his bear
feeding permit! Please read the below links, check out the

"Stranger Among Bears" is now playing on Animal Planet.
For more than twenty years,
Charles Vandergaw has been living with wild bears in the
Alaskan wilderness. He has developed a unique, but
controversial, relationship with the black and grizzly bears
that live near his isolated cabin. This is a 6 part
series, that was recently shown, and hopefully, will come back
again! Check out the video previews on Animal Planet and for
current scheduling.
