Lost Cove Naturalist Center

We offer programs in many formats that are best suited to your needs. They include:

To sign up for our programs, you will need to fill out the application and release waiver form and send it in with a deposit of 1/2 of the the course payment in-order to hold your spot in the program. Also download and read our detailed information on what to bring and expect for your particular program.

This deposit is non-refundable, but if you contact us 48 hours before the start of the program to cancel, we can transfer this deposit towards another program if we can still fill your slot. The remainder will be due the day of class before we start.

If you have any questions prior to signing up (or afterwards) please let us know and we'll be more than happy to answer them!

Feburary 20-21 8:00am Saturday till noon Saturday Wilderness Self Reliance & Skills Overnight skills workshop— Workshop will focus on the Basic (4) of shelter, water, fire and food in a survival situation. $100 per person (includes meals)
March 6-7 8:00am Saturday till noon Sunday Tracking, Trapping, and Foraging; Overnight Skills Workshop Tracking animals in an ancient art form and is essential for setting traps and acquiring food on the landscape. We will explore the basics of tracking and setting traps as well as foraging for edible plants. $100 per person (includes meals)
March 13 11:00am - 3:00pm Medicinal and Edible Plant Worhshop Afternoon workshop with focuses on the basics of identifying, preparing and uses of wild plants. $20 for supplies- Bring own lunch.
April 2-3 8:00am Friday till 10:00am Sunday Basic Wilderness Survival Shelters- Overnight Workshop Overnight Workshop Workshop will focus on several natural and hand-made shelters that can save your life in a survival situation. $100 per person (includes meals)
April 10 Friday 8:00am-4:00pm "Acquiring Water from the Landscape"   Acquiring Water from the landscape—This workshop will be a gentle hike in which we seek out and acquire water from various sources on the landscape. We will also cover several purification methods and ways to identify clean water sources. $50 Bring Lunch
April 30 - May 2 8:00am 30th to 10am 2nd "First three days"   Workshop will cover the necessities of wilderness self reliance in the basic (4) of shelter, water, fire and food and steps necessary to acquire these during the critical First Three Days of a wilderness survival situation. $250 Includes meals
May 8 Friday 8:00am-4:00pm "Collection and Preparation of Fire by Friction Materials"   Workshop will focus on tree, plant and other material identification from which to gather the necessary materials to construct a fire by friction device such as the bow drill and hand drill. $50 Bring Lunch
May 14 Friday 7:00am-4:00pm "Awarness, Tracking and Bird Language "   Workshop will focus on the Awareness skills of the Native peoples as these are the most critical skills to understand as relating to tracking, silent movement, hunting and understanding bird behavioral language. $50 Bring Lunch
May 28-29 8:00am Friday - Noon Saturday "Scout Workshop"   The Apache Scout was the ultimate survival expert, able to live in any environment in total comfort and security. We will spend an evening exploring the skills of the Apache Scout of survival living and wilderness self-reliance. $100 Bring own meals
June 4-5 8:00am Friday - 10:00am Saturday "Living the Philosophy of the Earth and Basic Ceremony"   We will explore the basic Earth Philosophy that lies within all Native Peoples understanding of the natural world. This will be a dynamic, hands-on excursion into the living skills of awareness, ceremony, dynamic meditation and spiritual understandings that were passed down by Grandfather Stalking Wolf. $120 Includes Food and Ceremonial Supplies
       
   

Ongoing Naturalist Clubs

 

 

1st & Third Saturdays

9:00am till 12:00pm

Edible & Medicinal Plant Club On most 1st & 3rd Saturdays (when we are not holding one of our weekend long classes), we will be holding a Plant Club at various places in the Blue Ridge Mountains.  Bring your journals/notebooks, Plant Identification Field Guilds are very helpful and a good place to take notes.  Also rain gear (if needed), camera, snack/lunch and water is highly recommended. Proper ethnical harvesting will be taught and observed at all times!

You need to pre-register with us prior to the actual Saturday, so we can have a head count and then we'll let you know where to meet us. These walks take place at various National Forest and private lands in the Blowing Rock, Boone, and Linville areas.

2nd & 4th Saturdays

9:00am till 12:00pm

Animal Tracking Club On most 2nd & 4th Saturdays (when we are not holding one of our weekend long classes), we will be holding an Animal Tracking Club to learn more naturalist skills about the animals that live in this bio-region, their behaviors and most importantly, learn to identify and follow their tracks and trails. These walks take place at various National Forest and private lands in the Blowing Rock, Boone, and Linville areas. Bring your journals/notebooks, Mammal Identification Field Guilds, proper wilderness footwear as we'll be going off the beaten path most of the time and clothes to get dirty.  Also rain gear (if needed), snack /lunch and water is highly recommended.
