A majority of the skills covered are techniques based on the teachings handed down to Tom Brown, Jr. by Grandfather Stalking Wolf and his lineage, the Coyote Clan of the Lipan Apache. Tom Brown Jr. met Stalking Wolf, whom he called Grandfather when Tom was seven years old and Grandfather was eight-three. Over the next ten years, Grandfather passed down the knowledge of his
Peoples’ understanding of the natural world To Tom. After that, Tom spent the
next ten years wandering and incorporating the knowledge into his own life while surviving lavishly in many landscapes from Death Valley to Alaska and Central and South America.
As a brief introduction, Stalking Wolf was born into a small clan of
nomadic people who never lived on a reservation or participated in the warfare that was engulfing the Southwest US during the late 1880’s. Stalking Wolf’s clan separated themselves from the carnage and warfare going on and moved deep into the mountains of Northern Mexico. The Coyote Clan lived a simple yet powerful existence and they swore off all materials not made by their own hands from the Natural world. This small clan lived unnoticed by Native or settler alike and their simple existence took them wandering through many territories as they attempted to simplify their existence on a physical and spiritual level.
When Grandfathers Stalking Wolf was a young boy he received his name by stalking and touching a sleeping wolf. Also at a young age, he received his first Vision that foretold of him wandering for sixty years gathering the knowledge of various peoples living close to the Earth and after that time he would meet someone to pass down this knowledge to. So for sixty years, Grandfather wandered from the Arctic Circle to Argentina and everywhere in between, gathering knowledge and understanding of the natural world.
